What should a receipt include?

A receipt confirms a payment that's already been made — unlike an invoice, which requests payment. Include the payment date, amount paid, payment method, and a description of what was purchased. No due date is needed, since the transaction is already complete.

What's the difference between a receipt and an invoice?

An invoice is a request for payment sent before or at the time of a sale. A receipt is proof that payment has already been received. A single sale often generates both: an invoice first, then a receipt once it's paid.

Do I need to give a receipt for every sale?

Requirements vary by country and business type, but it's good practice to offer one for every transaction — customers may need it for expense claims, returns, or warranty claims, and you'll need your copy for bookkeeping.
